Vazdan was originally a musical suite I wrote. However, while I was finishing the composing process, I stumbled upon a digitised camera footage recorded by my great-grandfather, Dušan Varda, in 1930s. The shots were spontaneous, weird, very personal, and of course, silent. Each of them seemed to crave for the music. I instantly knew I want to pair it with the suite. After a lot of work with Piotr LIpowicz, it was made into a 36-minute-long film.
However for live performances, we believe that attempting to recreate and play the music directly to the film is constraining and counterproductive to the improvised nature of the music, so an even more ambitious idea was born.
To decompose both the music and the film and attempt to put it back together live on stage, leaving space for both the film and the music to change, through acts of spontaneity and improvisation. In that way bringing the music and the film even closer together and hopefully presenting something new and fresh each time.
